Certification Process
Register for an upcoming Instructor Examination.
Successfully pass the Instructor Examination.
Submit your instructor certification application and all required documentation through the Arizona Supreme Court Defensive Driving Program.
Receive approval from the Defensive Driving Board before providing defensive driving instruction .
Please note: You must successfully pass the Instructor Examination before you are eligible to submit an instructor application. All instructor applications are submitted electronically through the Arizona Supreme Court's licensing portal after you have passed the examination.
Board Review Schedule
Instructor applications are reviewed by the Defensive Driving Board before certification is granted. Processing times vary depending on when your completed application is received and approved by the Board.
Application Assistance
Reimbursements for the initial $250 Instructor Examination and Application Fee are available for qualified instructors who contract with ABC Defensive Driving.

Independent Contractor Relationship
ABC Defensive Driving contracts with certified Defensive Driving Instructors on a part-time, independent contractor (1099) basis. As an independent contractor, instructors have the flexibility to accept teaching opportunities based on their availability.
ABC Defensive Driving does not restrict independent contractors from providing instructional services for other defensive driving schools or organizations. Contractors are free to pursue other professional opportunities, provided they continue to meet all Arizona Supreme Court Defensive Driving Program requirements.
Contractors are expected to protect confidential and proprietary information obtained through their relationship with ABC Defensive Driving. This includes, but is not limited to, internal business processes, administrative procedures, pricing information, customer information, marketing strategies, and other non-public information. Contractors may provide services for other organizations; however, contractors may not represent another organization while acting on behalf of ABC Defensive Driving or misrepresent their affiliation with ABC Defensive Driving.
Contractors are responsible for maintaining their independent contractor status and applicable business and tax obligations associated with their services. Teaching opportunities are generally available during the following timeframes:
Morning classes: Approximately 7:30 AM – 1:00 PM
Evening classes: Approximately 4:30 PM – 10:00 PM
Compensation is based on the instructional services provided and typically ranges from $150–$195 per class, depending on experience and assignment.
Most classes consist of approximately 4.5 hours of classroom instruction, along with reasonable preparation and facility setup time.
ABC Defensive Driving does not guarantee a minimum number of classes or assignments. Contractors determine their availability and may accept available teaching opportunities based on their schedule.
Minimum Requirements
Be certified as an Arizona Supreme Court Defensive Driving Instructor.
Have reliable personal transportation.
Operate professionally, communicate effectively, and provide instructional services independently.
Maintain compliance with all Arizona Supreme Court Defensive Driving Program rules and instructor standards.
Possess strong communication and public speaking skills.
